POWER OF MANTRAS

A Mantra can consist of a powerful word or a combination of words and can be used for self realisation, freedom from worries, to fulfil one's desires, to ward off the effects of malefic planets, to bring you success....you can choose for yourself.

Sanskrit in Mantra for Vinayaka or Vigneswara:

Vakratunda Mahakaya Surya Koti samaprabha; Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva Karyeshu Sarvada.

Meaning: O Elephant faced Ganesh, the Almighty One, thy effulgence is equal to millions of Suns.  I pray thee far removal of all impediments in the path of my auspicious deeds.

The Method, the how, when and where of Mantras.

Mantras must be chanted or recited with unwavering devotion and motivation.  Chanting them as a matter of course deprives them of power and is practically useless from the point of view of conscious growth, evolultion and effect.  Sitting in a position which maximises the total effect of mantras is desirable.  Accoring to the ancient systems, the lotus posture is the best asana for meditation and for mantras.  Other asanas (postures) which are recommended are:

1. Padma Asana

2. Vaira Asana

3. Siddha Asana or Vajra Asana

Once you have decided upon the asana for a particular mantra, you must use the same mantra for the duration of the chanting.  You can sit on the earth (as distinct from floor), on a deer skin, a tiger skin, a wooden platform, a cotton or plant fibremat.  Synthetic materials should not be used.  Mantras should be chanted in a quiet place.  Once a place has been chosen, it should become permanent for all practical purposes.

The best time for chanting of mantras is the Brahmanahurta (4 am).  Other good times are the transition periods i.e., when night is turning into day (dawn and sunrise), when day is turning into night (twilight and sunset).  You can also choose the time before going to bet.  Having chosen your time, you should be regular about the hours and duration of your chanting.  If chanting mantras during the day time, you should sit facing the north or the east.  If chanting mantras during the night, you should sit facing the north.  Generally, a mala or rosary of 108 Rudraksha or tulsi (basil) or sandalwood beads or sfateek (crystals) is used when chanting mantras.  The following beads can be used for chanting specific mantras.

1. For Wealth : Rosary of coral beads

2. For Children: Rosary of Putrajiva

3. For Desires:  Rosary of Crystals

Proferably, your rosary should not be visible to others when you are using it.  Covering your hand with a cloth or a specially made covering is a comman practice.  With the rosary hanging over due middle, ring and index finger of the right hand, the tumb and middle finger are generally used to roll the beads.  You must not cross the 'head' of the rosary when rolling the heads and must revert to the head after completing a complete rosary.

The number of times a mantra has to be chanted a usually specified.  Normally, ift is considered auspicious to chant a mantra 11 times, or 108 times or in multiples of 108.  You can increase it but cannot decrease it.

THE POWER OF YANTRAS:

Yantras sometimes supplement the power of mantras and are often as strong as the mantras themselves.  If a mantra is the invisible driving force, the yantra is often the visible means.  Yantras are some times made up of numbers, sometimes of a certain set of symbols, sometimes of mantras.  They can be written on paper or bhojpatras (parchment) and worn as a talisman, they can be engraved on an amulet or pendant and worn on thebody, they can be painted on a door or wall or the floor, they can be engraved on gold, silver or painted on leaves, stones and objects.

The form of transference which is employed must be done according to a specified set of rules.  Certain yantras can only be made on certain days, at a certain time.  Similarly, there is a distinct link between the yantra and the metal chose.  A yantra to appease the ill effects of the planet Saturn is generally engraved on iron - the metal associated with Saturn.

The Yantras written, drawn or painted on paper, bhojpatra or leaves, must use the inks specified by ancient texts, such as those made from ren sandalwood or saffron or white sandalwood, etc.  The type of pen, its length, width, etc., used for preparing a yantra varies according to the purpose and type.  Whether on paper or any other material, the size of the yantraa is also pre-specified, as is the duration for which its efficacy will last.

The yantras must be installed in a certain manner, on a certain day, at a certain time, facing a certain direction and must be sanctified by a mantra begun on a certain day and time recited for a specific number of times.

A particular yantra must be washed in the specified manner, for example, in milk and water.  Unless a yantra is worn or installed according to the rules, its efficacy is greatly reduced or is useless.  Some of the earliest yantras are associated with auspicious symbols and powerful numbers.  In ancient India, the good luck square of nine which always added up horizontally, vertically or diagonally to fifteen was deemed a harbinger of prosperity and happiness.  Even today, the square is painted near the entrance of shops, homes, establishments.
